As we all know rain is a very important part of helping our plants and trees grow. In the landscape industry we like rain because it helps grow what we plant however, it can also make getting our job done challenging.
As a colored mulch producer, TLB Wood Products LLC, has been educating landscape contractors on the harm rain can initially do to colored dyed mulch. When mulch is dyed, a color based dye is used and until the colorant dries on the wood it is at risk to lose its color properties. When the colored material is in a pile the inside can't fully dry and lock into place. Even if the material sits for a week the dye may not have officially locked. We recommend 6+ hours of sun and wind to allow the colorant to dry and lock into the wood mulch. It will take longer for mulch to dry on an overcast day that is muggy and not windy. So, if you are laying color dyed mulch be ware of rain that is in the forecast.
If you happen to have mulch in a pile that has been rained on before it has had a chance to lock you may not be in too much trouble. The inside of your pile will still be wet with colorant and once there is no rain in the forecast you can turn the pile into itself as only the outside of the pile should be the only place where the wood has lost color. We do not recommend turning the pile until you are ready to use the mulch AND there is no rain in the forecast.
If you have already laid the mulch than you may have lost some or all color properties. If there is still some color left, you can try to rake up the mulch and turn it however most likely the colorant has washed into the soil.
Spread the word to minimize loss!

Educating ourselves on the BioMass Industry
As a wood biomass purchaser and supplier for Wisconsin, it is very important to learn as much as possible about what thermal energy, bio fuels, renewable resources and energy conservations are.
First, what is biomass? Biomass Fuel is natural organic matter used as a fuel, especially in a power station with a boiler for the generation of energy, electricity, and heat.
Here are a few things you may find interesting:
We hope to have our website available for more information by mid-February. Please visit www.tlbcompanies.com for more.
Contact us with any information you may have on availability of biomass fuels as we are always looking for new sources. Thanks!!
First, what is biomass? Biomass Fuel is natural organic matter used as a fuel, especially in a power station with a boiler for the generation of energy, electricity, and heat.
Here are a few things you may find interesting:
- Biomasses biggest advantage is that it is sustainable and thus a renewable energy source deriving its energy from biological material. This means that we can produce more biomass fuel (i.e. cultivating specially designed crops or planting trees) to produce more biomass energy within a short period of time.
- Biomass is one of the most plentiful and well-utilized sources of renewable energy in the world.
- Modern biomass is used to produce power and heat in large-scale facilities: solid biomass, biogas, biofuel or biodiesel.
- Using biomass as a fuel means that carbon dioxide (CO2) which was absorbed from the air while the plant was growing, is released back into the air when the fuel is burned. The system is said to be carbon neutral.
- Biomass is the top candidate for oil equivalents, and indeed biodiesel has been getting more attention of late as a renewable and low-net-carbon method of fueling vehicles.
- Biomass is considered to be one of the key renewable resources of the future at both small- and large-scale levels. It already supplies 14 % of the world’s primary energy consumption.
We hope to have our website available for more information by mid-February. Please visit www.tlbcompanies.com for more.
